Due to the amendment to the Civil Code, the legal marriage age for women has been raised from 16 to 18 from April 1, 2022. However, as a transitional measure, women who are already 16 or older as of April 1, 2022 are allowed to marry even if they are under 18.

The figures for 25 to 44 years old for 2011 and 2016 were calculated based on population-weighted averages.

*The figure of 2011 is "Supplementary-estimated figure". The reason of the treatment is that 2011 yearly average results for whole Japan were missing due to the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

SDG 指標 5.6.2 は、国連⼈⼝開発調査に対する各国政府回答に基づいて算出されている。国連⼈⼝開発調査は 1963 年より実施されている。指標5.6.2 の算出に必要な質問は、国連⼈⼝開発調査モジュール II「出⽣、家族計画及びリプロダクティブ・ヘルス」に含まれている。
国連⼈⼝開発調査票は、国連経済社会局(DESA)⼈⼝部によって各国国連代表部に送付される。その後、国連⼈⼝基⾦(UNFPA)が各国政府に対し、提出のフォローアップを⾏う。ベースラインデータは、2019 年に第 12 回国連⼈⼝開発調査を通じて収集され、第２次データ収集は2021-2022年に第 13 回調査を通じて行われた。今後のデータ収集は 4 年毎に予定されている。

Indicator 5.6.2 is calculated based on official government responses collected through the United Nations Inquiry among Governments on Population and Development. The Inquiry has been conducted since 1963. All questions required for indicator 5.6.2 are integrated into Module II on fertility, family planning, and reproductive health of the Inquiry.
The Inquiry is sent to the Permanent Missions by UN Population Division (DESA). UNFPA then follow-up with UNFPA Country Offices to facilitate the data submissions from national governments.
Baseline data was collected in 2019 through the 12th Inquiry and a second round was collected in 2021-2022 through the 13th inquiry. Further data collection will be scheduled every 4 years.
