Side Event of the G20 Development Working Group on "Prospects on Achieving Disaster Risk Reduction Agenda"

On Wednesday 13 March, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) co-organized a Side-Event entitled "Prospects on Achieving Disaster Risk Reduction Agenda" with the Organization for the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in the margins of the second G20 Development Working Group (DWG) meeting under the Japanese Presidency.

At the beginning of the side event, Mr. Norikazu Suzuki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Japan, made opening remarks. Mr. Suzuki, in his remarks, announced that Japan had achieved contributions to the area related to disaster risk reduction more than our original commitment, the Sendai Cooperation Initiative for Disaster Risk Reduction, which includes 4 billion dollars in assistance and training of 40,000 people as leaders who would play key roles in disaster risk reduction and reconstruction over the past four years to 2018.

After that, various panelists including from the G20 member countries had lively discussions on topics such as "Multiple Efforts for Disaster Risk Reduction," "Importance of Disaster Risk Reduction Investment and Build Back Better," and "Achieving for Target E of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction."

Mr. Hiroshi Matsuura, Deputy Assistant Minister/Deputy Director-General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, wrapped up the side event, expressing the expectation that the G20 member countries and international organizations will play a key role in scaling up the efforts of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and pre-disaster investment, in cooperation for achieving the disaster risk reduction agenda such as Sendai Framework, the SDGs, and Paris agreement.
