G20 Osaka Summit

First Sherpa Meeting in Tokyo (January 19-20, 2019)

The First Sherpa Meeting for the G20 Osaka Summit was held on January 19-20, 2019 and delegations from G20 member countries, invited guest countries and international organizations gathered in Tokyo to kick-off the G20 Sherpa Process. G20 Sherpas, who are official representatives of Leaders, had preliminary discussions on agenda items for the G20 Osaka Summit. As the term "sherpa" has its roots in mountain climbing, and refers to an assistant who guides climbers to the summit of a mountain, the Sherpas will be guiding G20 Leaders towards a successful Osaka Summit.

Discussions in plenary sessions focused on Japan's priorities for the G20 Osaka Summit,
(1) Sustainable growth of the global economy,
(2) Efforts to address global challenges, and
(3) technological innovation as an overarching theme.

Building on previous efforts by the G20, specific discussion topics included the global economy, trade and investment, environment and energy, labor and employment, sustainable development, global health and women's empowerment.

Sherpas had fruitful discussions and the meeting was adjourned with high hopes towards the next Sherpa Meeting to be convened in Yokohama.
