1. Background and Overview

In 2022, then Prime Minister Kishida announced the establishment of the IGEP. The purpose of the meeting is to have candid discussions among experts from both nuclear weapon States and non-nuclear-weapon States, as well as those from both participating and non-participating countries in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), with the involvement of former and incumbent political leaders of the world.
The sixth and last meeting was held in Tokyo on March 30-31, 2025 and the IGEP members issued the recommendations for the 2026 NPT Review Conference.
