Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

March 17, 2020

1. Overview and Backdrop of this Initiative

This meeting was established to follow up and develop the discussions in the meetings of the Group of Eminent Persons for Substantive Advancement of Nuclear Disarmament, that Japan organized five times. The meeting intends to discuss issues including nuclear disarmament measures to be taken by the international community and thereby contribute to building confidence and exploring common ground among states towards a world free of nuclear weapons, with the participation of government officials and experts from both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states.

On March 6th, the Track 1.5 Meeting for Substantive Advancement of Nuclear Disarmament was held in Tokyo, Japan. The meeting was attended by government officials from nine countries including nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states as well as nine experts from various countries including Japan. In the meeting, participants discussed three concrete nuclear disarmament measures towards the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference to be held this year: transparency, nuclear risk reduction, and nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation education.
