Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

On September 3, the webinar on the IGEP was held.

  1. Dr. SHIRAISHI Takashi, Special Professor Emeritus of the Prefectural University of Kumamoto and Chair of the IGEP, Mr. TAKAMIZAWA Nobushige, Senior Fellow of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Dr. AKIYAMA Nobumasa, Professor at Hitotsubashi University/ Director of the Center for Disarmament, Science and Technology (JIIA) introduced the past activities of the IGEP and its recommendations “Stepping Back from The Nuclear Precipice: Urgent Actions in Pursuit of a World without Nuclear Weapons (PDF) Open a New Window” issued at its sixth and final meeting in March this year.
  2. In the following Q&A session, among the young generation, Ms. NISHIYAMA Kokoro, visiting professor at Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, Nagasaki University and Ms. INOUE Tsugumi, A-bomb legacy successor at Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation joined the panelists. Over 100 participants including students, experts, NGO and civil society representatives, and officials from Embassies in Tokyo had candid and lively discussions over a wide range of questions including process of compiling the recommendations, key issues to be addressed in preparation for the 2026 NPT Review Conference and efforts to promote accurate understanding of the realities of atomic bombings.

The IGEP is a forum in which participants from both nuclear-weapon States and non-nuclear-weapon States, as well as those from both participating and non-participating countries in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), to exchange ideas and thoughts beyond their respective national positions and engage in candid discussions concerning a concrete path towards the realization of a "world without nuclear weapons." Since its first meeting in December 2022, six meetings have been held.
