3rd Webinar on the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons (IGEP)

On February 20, the 3rd webinar on the IGEP was held.
- From the IGEP members, Ms. Manpreet Sethi, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Aerospace Power, Mr.George Perkovich, Japan Chair for a World Without Nuclear Weapons, senior Fellow, Nuclear Policy Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Ms. Tanya Ogilvie-White, Member, Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (APLN), Mr. Nobumasa Akiyama, Director, Center for Disarmament, Science & Technology, JIIA (Professor at Hitotsubashi University), presented an overview of the recommendations “Stepping Back from The Nuclear Precipice: Urgent Actions in Pursuit of a World without Nuclear Weapons (PDF)
” issued at the IGEP’s sixth and final meeting that took place in March last year. - Following the presentation by the IGEP members, Mr. Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York (President-designate of the 11th NPT Review Conference), provided his feedback on the recommendations and also referred to the outlook and priorities for this year’s NPT Review Conference.
- In the Q&A session, with more than 100 participants from around the world in attendance, a wide range of issues were actively discussed. These included the importance of the NPT regime in light of recent international circumstances, the encouragement of disarmament education and the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy as well as technology transfer.

The IGEP is a forum in which participants from both nuclear-weapon States and non-nuclear-weapon States, as well as those from both participating and non-participating countries in the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), to exchange ideas and thoughts beyond their respective national positions and engage in candid discussions concerning a concrete path towards the realization of a "world without nuclear weapons." Since its first meeting in December 2022, six meetings have been held.
