 On May 6, commencing at around 9:40 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. . Prime Minister Abe and President Trump exchanged views about the latest developments relating to North Korea and closely coordinated their policies with regard to the issue of North Korea. The two leaders shared the recognition that the full implementation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions continues to be necessary towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
  2. . The two leaders completely shared the view that Japan and the United States will continue to cooperate more closely and work together towards the resolution of the abductions, nuclear, and missile issues.
  3. . Prime Minister Abe expressed appreciation for the statement issued by President Trump on the occasion of the abdication from the Imperial throne of His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus and the accession to the throne of His Majesty the Emperor. The Leaders confirmed that they would continue to cooperate closely toward the success of President Trump’s visit to Japan scheduled from May 25 to 28, as the first State Guest in the Reiwa period.
