Current Status of Implementation 2009

- (i) With the financial support of the Norwegian Government the Cities in Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) is being implemened in five pilot cities of which two are in Africa; Uganda (Kampala) and Mozambique (Maputo).
(ii) The initial pilot cities have finalised their vulnerability assessment reports.
Local authorities have been sensitized to their role and to the need for a participatory approach in addressing climate change.
(iii) The cities have held workshops at which all stakeholders were invited to participate in the formulation of actions and strategies to address the challenges.
In all the cities specific issues were identified that highlight the need to strengthen governance systems to deal with climate change.
(iv) During the last year the CCCI has included additional five cities in Africa to join the initiative. These cities are: Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso; Kigali, Rwanda; Mombasa, Kenya; Saint Louis, Senegal; and Walvis Bay, Namibia. These cities are at different stages in preparing their vulnerability assessments.

- (i) Utilising the Norwegian funds; Uganda (Kampala) and Mozambique (Maputo); have been selected through a detailed strategic selection criteria and through internal consultations, Beira would be included in next phase.
(ii) Kampala: A national and city situational analysis has started and was expected to be completed by end of January 2009.
(iii) Maputo: On-going municipal elections contributed to delays in setting up meetings with the City level actors. A key-stakeholders meeting was scheduled for November, when the new city municipality key actors were in office, to draft the road map for implementing CCCI in Maputo.
(iv) Nigeria (Lagos), Senegal (Dakar) and other cities would be included while funds are being received.
