The 9th meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee

1. The 9th Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee was held on October 2nd 2019 in Tokyo under the joint chairmanship of Naoto Hisajima, Ambassador, Director-General, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and François Jacq, General Administrator of the CEA.

2. The participants exchanged views on their respective nuclear energy policies, nuclear safety cooperation, back-end of the fuel cycle, radioactive waste management, nuclear research and development including fast neutron reactors and material test reactors, decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, off–site environmental remediation, nuclear emergency preparedness and response, nuclear security, as well as industrial cooperation. The participants also shared their strong appreciation of the Japan - France cooperation in the area of civil nuclear energy and their intention to continue and reinforce it.

3. The Committee welcomed the Roadmap on Japan-France Cooperation for Opening New Horizons between Japan and France under an Exceptional Partnership (2019-2023), and the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and the Ministry for Ecological and Inclusive Transition of France on Innovation for Energy Transition, which both include continuing close partnership in the field of civil nuclear energy, and shared views on the importance of the highest standards of nuclear safety and security and non-proliferation, while promoting nuclear energy and nuclear related technologies in the world.

4. The next meeting will be held in 2020 in France.
