On October 7, commencing at 5 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Nhial Deng Nhial, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan, who is visiting Japan for the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Kono wholeheartedly welcomed Minister Nhial Deng’s participation in the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, stated that Japan will continue its commitment for peace and stability in South Sudan, and welcomed the recent agreements by South Sudan officials on a permanent ceasefire for promoting peace and reorganization of the transitional government.

2. Following that, Minister Nhial Deng expressed gratitude for Japan’s support not only for implementing the agreement for promoting peace, but also for the national dialogue process.

3. Moreover, Minister Nhial Deng expressed gratitude for Japan’s support for building bridges across the Nile River, improving the water supply and the Comprehensive Agriculture Master Plan (CAMP), and stated that infrastructure improvement and agriculture are the two most important fields for South Sudan.

In addition, Minister Kono indicated that Japan would provide food assistance to improve food security in South Sudan. In addition, he stated that the stationing of Japanese JICA personnel has resumed, and requested that safety be ensured for the people working in the field for economic cooperation and others active in South Sudan.
