Japan-South Sudan Relations

On August 25, commencing at 4:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, met with the Hon. Deng Alor Kuol, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan, during his visit to Maputo, the Republic of Mozambique, to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, Minister Kono wholeheartedly welcomed Minister Deng Alor’s attendance at the TICAD Ministerial Meeting. He also stated that, despite the withdrawal of the Self-Defense Forces engineering unit from South Sudan, the Government of Japan will continue to provide maximum cooperation for the peace and stability of South Sudan, the progress of its political processes, and the improvement of its humanitarian situation. 
2. Minister Deng Alor expressed his appreciation and expectations toward Japan’s assistance to South Sudan, and explained the recent state of the ongoing National Dialogue process and of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)’s process in order to improve the situation in South Sudan.
3. In addition, Minister Deng Alor highly praised Japan’s contributions to the development of Africa through the TICAD process.
