Japan-South Sudan Relations

On August 26, commencing at 6:30 p.m., for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who was visiting Nairobi (Kenya) to attend the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), held a Japan-South Sudan Foreign Ministers' Meeting with the Hon. Deng Alor Kuol, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan. The overview is as follows. 

1. In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Kishida expressed his desire to work together for the success of this first TICAD in Africa. In response, Foreign Minister Deng Alor stated that TICAD is a very important meeting. 
2. Foreign Minister Deng Alor commented that Japan has been helping South Sudan in many ways, and that everyone in South Sudan knows the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He also expressed his hope for the early resumption of economic cooperation projects.    
3. Foreign Minister Kishida mentioned that it was extremely regrettable that Japanese nationals were under threat due to deteriorated  public safety in  Juba in July  and stressed the importance of securing safe conditions as a prerequisite for assistance activities. He also stated the importance of implementing  the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict and called on full cooperation with the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS). Foreign Minister Kishida also touched upon Japan's support for sending South Sudan's athletes to the Rio Olympics, and explained that Japan will continue to support efforts to give hope to young peopleand to promote peace in the country.  
4. Furthermore, the two Ministers exchanged opinions on cooperation in the international arena, including United Nations Security Council reform.
