Japan – United States Non-Proliferation Dialogue

1. The Japan – United States Non-Proliferation Dialogue was held on May 9 and 10 in Tokyo. Mr. Masahiro Kawasaki, Deputy Director-General of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Yoichi Iida, Director-General of Trade Control Department, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, represented Japan, and Dr. Benjamin Purser, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, U.S. Department of State, represented the United States.

2. This dialogue is one of the several meetings between Japan and the United States held annually to address the threat posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

3. The two countries exchanged their views on a wide range of non-proliferation issues, including North Korea’s nuclear, ballistic missile and other Weapons of Mass Destruction programs as well as export controls in Asian countries. Both sides agreed to continue this dialogue.
