Japan-Palau Foreign Ministers’ Meeting


On March 15, commencing at 2:05 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with the Hon. Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg, Minister of State of the Republic of Palau, who is visiting Japan to attend the Senior Officials’ Meeting for the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. At the outset, Minister Kono welcomed Minister Rehuher-Marugg to Japan, and stated that Palau is an important partner that shares deep historical ties with Japan, and expressed his intention to advance further cooperation for the realization of a free and open Indo-Pacific. In response, Minister Rehuher-Marugg stated her intention to deepen the cooperative relationship between Palau and Japan.
2. Minister Kono requested Palau’s cooperation for the success of the PALM8. In addition, Minister Kono and Minister Rehuher-Marugg exchanged views on Japan-Palau cooperation on a wide range of fields, such as regional affairs including North Korea, fisheries, recovery of remains of the war dead, investment, and tourism.
