Senior Officials’ Meeting for the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (SOM8)

1. The Senior Officials’ Meeting for the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (SOM8) will be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 15. The meeting is expected to provide a forum for consultations in preparation for PALM8, which is scheduled to be held on May 18 and 19, 2018 in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture.
2. The meeting will be co-chaired by Mr. Takeo Mori, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Peseta Noumea Simi, Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Independent State of Samoa, and will be attended by senior officials from Pacific island countries, Australia and New Zealand.

This summit-level meeting has been held every three years since 1997, in order to exchange views at the leaders level on various issues and challenges facing Pacific island countries and regions.
The 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8) is scheduled to be held in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture on May 18 and 19, 2018, under the theme “We are Islanders – Partnership Towards Prosperous, Free and Open Pacific.”
