Intensification of Tension in Syria
(Statement by Press Secretary Norio Maruyama)

1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned about the intensification of military tension in the Syrian Arab Republic, in addition to the situation in the northern and southern part of the country, especially the situation of Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus where airstrikes and shelling have intensified and caused many casualties.

2. The Government of Japan believes that the Crisis in Syria cannot be resolved by any military means and we must keep pursing a political solution. The Government of Japan calls on all parties to stop any military actions in order to enable humanitarian assistance and to make utmost effort to advance the political process led by the United Nations.

3. The Government of Japan intends to coordinate with the international community to achieve the cessation of all violence.
