Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT) Plenary Meeting



1. The Government of Japan held the Plenary Meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT) on June 1 and 2 in Tokyo. Approximately 220 representatives from 74 countries, including the U.S. and Russian co-chairs, as well as four international organizations participated in the meeting.
2. In his keynote address (English (PDF) / Japanese (PDF)
), State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kentaro Sonoura strongly condemned provocations by North Korea, emphasized the need for capacity building and international cooperation to enhance nuclear security, and presented Japan’s efforts to strengthen measures against nuclear terrorism in view of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. was issued by the United States and the Russian Federation at the conclusion of the meeting.
3. Japan remains committed to leading the international efforts to enhance nuclear security.
