Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida Meets with the First Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba

On June 3, commencing at 10:55 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdes, First Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, who is visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

 

1. Foreign Minister Kishida welcomed the first visit to Japan by First Vice-President Díaz-Canel, expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received when he visited Cuba last year, and explained his intention to continue to engage in strengthening the relationship between Japan and Cuba. Foreign Minister Kishida expressed his hope for Cuba to develop its business environment for promoting the acceptance of foreign investment in order to enhance the bilateral relationship, which has entered a new stage.

2. The First Vice-President Díaz-Canel expressed the view that the relationship between the two countries is progressing at various levels following the 400th anniversary of exchanges between Japan and Cuba and Foreign Minister Kishida’s visit to Cuba, the first such visit by a Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. The First Vice-President Díaz-Canel explained that Cuba is promoting to attract foreign investment in the Special Economic Development Zone of Mariel based on the new Foreign Investment Law, and from the perspective of accelerating the development of Cuba, he expressed his expectations for Japanese companies to establish businesses there.

3. The two parties also exchanged views on the First Vice-President Díaz-Canel’s visit to Hiroshima, bilateral exchanges, and cooperation in the international arena.
