Japan-Cuba Relations

On June 2, commencing at 3:55 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Vice-president of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Abe expressed welcome to First Vice-president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez for his first visit and stated that he would like to develop the bilateral relations taking the opportunity of the Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Cuba last year and the First Vice-president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez’s visit to Japan.

2. In response, First Vice-president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez explained that the bilateral relations has been strengthening in recent years through the 400th anniversary of exchanges between Japan and Cuba, the holding of public-business sector joint committee and proactive cultural exchanges. First Vice-president also reaffirmed his commitment to further deepen the bilateral relations, as numerous Japanese companies has been interested in investing Cuba.

3. The two parties also exchanged opinions covering issues such as strengthening of Japan-Cuba economic ties and international situations including the U.S.-Cuba relations.
