Start of the New Government in Myanmar
(Statement by Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida)

1. Japan welcomes and congratulates the official start of a new Government led by the National League for Democracy (NLD) on March 30 (same day local time), which received overwhelming support from the population in a general election held in November 2015.
2. Japan is pleased that a new page in Myanmar’s history has begun with the peaceful transition to a new Government through a democratic process that meets the expectations of the people of Myanmar.
3. Japan is confident that the new Government will make further advances with democratization, rule of law, economic reforms, and national reconciliation under the leadership of Mr. Htin Kyaw, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
4. Japan intends to continue its full-fledged support at government and private-sector levels for initiatives targeting further advances and prosperity in Myanmar and aims to further strengthen the longstanding friendly and cooperative relationship with Myanmar.
