The Fourth Meeting for the U.S.-Japan Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation

1. The Fourth Meeting of the Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation between Japan and the United States will be held on November 4, 2015 in Washington D.C.

2. Mr. Shinsuke SUGIYAMA (Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs) from Japan and Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall (Deputy Secretary, Department of Energy) from the United States will jointly serve as co-chairs of this meeting and government ministries concerned will participate from both countries.

3. At this meeting, the participants will exchange their opinions in a wide range of areas such as the basic energy policies of both countries, and the efforts towards decommissioning the reactors of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station as well as safety, emergency preparedness and response, security and R&D of civil nuclear energy.

In the U.S.-Japan initiative announced at the U.S.-Japan summit held on April 30, 2012, Japan and the United States established a high-level Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation to further strengthen cooperation in this field, building on the close U.S.-Japan cooperation following Japan’s March 2011 nuclear accident. The first meeting was held on July 24, 2012 in Tokyo, the second meeting was held on November 4, 2013 in Washington D.C and the third meeting was held on June 12, 2014.
