Additional Emergency Assistance to Myanmar to the Flood Disaster

September 17, 2015

1. On Thursday, September 17, the Government of Japan decided to provide 10,000 mosquito nets as emergency relief goods to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Myanmar following serious damage from the floods in that country.

2. In Myanmar, the floods have occurred as a result of ongoing torrential rain in the country’s north central region since July 16. According to an announcement from the Government of Myanmar, as of September 2, these floods had caused 122 fatalities and affected 1.6 million people, and 476,000 households remain evacuated.

3. Originally, the Government of Japan provided blankets, sleeping pads and plastic sheets as emergency relief goods on August 4, and then on August 14, it also decided to extend Emergency Grant Aid of 2.6 million US dollars (approximately 325 million Japanese yen) via international organizations, but because the number of victims has continued to increase, the Government has also decided to provide additional emergency assistance.
