Japan-Jordan Summit Meeting

On November 27, commencing at 5:50 p.m. for approximately 50 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting at the Prime Minister's Office with His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, who is making an Official Working Visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
Following the meeting, the "Business Environment, Employment and Fiscal Sustainability Reform Development Policy Loan" and the "Bilateral Investment Agreement between Japan and Jordan" were signed in the presence of the two leaders. In addition, after the signing ceremony the two leaders held a joint press occasion. Afterwards, a dinner was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Abe, and the conversation covered wide-ranging issues on bilateral relations.

1 Opening Remarks


Prime Minister Abe welcomed King Abdullah II's first visit to Japan in two years, expressed his sympathy to the damage caused by the heavy rain in the Dead Sea region and southern Jordan, stated that Jordan plays an important role in the stability of the Middle East region and that Japan intends to continue to support the stability and development of Jordan.
In response, King Abdullah II expressed his happiness at visiting Japan again, and his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Japan. King Abdullah II also stated his gratefulness at visiting the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) Camp Narashino Exercise Area with Prime Minister Abe, and stated that he hopes to further strengthen the strategic relationship rooted in history and tradition, and upgrade bilateral relations.
In response, King Abdullah II expressed his happiness at visiting Japan again, and his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Japan. 2 Bilateral relations


(1) The two leaders proceeded to discuss bilateral relations. Prime Minister Abe expressed his gratitude for Jordan's cooperation in connection with the recent safe release of a Japanese journalist who was being detained in Syria. King Abdullah II welcomed the release of the journalist.
The two leaders confirmed that, in order to further materialize the strategic partnership, they will conduct strategic dialogue at the foreign ministers' level, as well as to newly establish pol-mil Dialogue between Japan and Jordan.
King Abdullah II congratulated the election of Japan as the host country of the 2025 World Exposition.
(2) Prime Minister Abe expressed his happiness that an exchange of notes on the "Business Environment, Employment and Fiscal Sustainability Reform Development Policy Loan" and a signing of an investment agreement between the two countries would take place on the same day in order to ensure Jordan's social and economic stability and support its development. King Abdullah II expressed his appreciation to the fact that Japan has consistently supported Jordan.
The two leaders confirmed that, in order to further materialize the strategic partnership, they will conduct strategic dialogue at the foreign ministers' level, as well as to newly establish pol-mil Dialogue between Japan and Jordan.

3 Regional affairs


Furthermore, the two leaders also held a broad exchange of views on the situation in East Asia, the Middle East Peace Process, the situation in the Middle East region including the situation in Syria, and, and they shared the view that the two countries will pursue further cooperation for the peace and stability of the region and the international community.
