Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga Receives a Courtesy Call from Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
Today, on January 7, commencing at 2:05 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Yoshihide Suga, Chief Cabinet Secretary, received a courtesy call from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). An overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga expressed his gratitude for the assistance from IAEA in the wake of an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, appreciated the leadership of Director General Amano for establishing a global nuclear liability regime, and added that he would like to continue cooperation in these fields in the future as well. Moreover, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga also stated that concerning the nuclear issues of North Korea and Iran, the Government of Japan places emphasis on the roles of IAEA and would continue its close cooperation with IAEA.
2. In response to the above, Director General Amano expressed his gratitude for assistance from Japan to the activities of IAEA and gave an explanation on recent activities by IAEA. Moreover, Director General Amano also stated that he would closely coordinate with Japan in the fields such as decommissioning and measures against contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, establishing a global nuclear liability regime, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear power generation/peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and nuclear security.
