Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Receives a Courtesy Call from Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
Today, on January 7, commencing at 11:15 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister, received a courtesy call from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). An overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Prime Minister Abe stated that he places emphasis on the roles of IAEA in decommissioning and measures against contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, establishing a global nuclear liability regime, and nuclear issues of North Korea and Iran and added that the Government of Japan would continue its close cooperation with IAEA.
2. In response, Director General Amano expressed his gratitude for the assistance from Japan to the initiatives of IAEA and gave an explanation on recent activities by IAEA. Moreover, Director General Amano also stated that he would firmly coordinate with Japan in the fields of decommissioning and measures against contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, establishing a global nuclear liability regime, nuclear non-proliferation, and nuclear power generation/peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
