JAPANESE STUDIES PROGRAMS
STUDY-IN-JAPAN PROGRAM
This institutional grant program provides limited support for four or more teachers and students, Librarians dealing with Japan-related collections, or other professionals to go to Japan for intensive Japanese-language or Japanese studies training. Individuals may not apply.
Priority is given to proposals that provide university students the opportunity to participate in programs at Japanese institutions in the humanities, social sciences, and arts that will be accepted for credit at their home institutions.
Support is given on a cost-sharing basis, with the Foundation's contribution not exceeding $15,000, and may include transportation and living expenses for the participants.
Applicants are responsible for making all necessary arrangements with the host Japanese institutions, as well as any other necessary appointments or reservations. The time spent in Japan should be of sufficient duration to fulfill the purpose of the project.
Grants are not normally renewable. When deemed necessary, however, the Foundation may continue to support a given project for up to three consecutive years. Recipients of such extended support may not apply to this program for one year thereafter.
- Note :
- Ten American universities (see Note on page 8) received a sizable Japanese Government donation in 1973. These universities are not eligible for study-IN-JAPAN GRANTS.
PUBLICATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
This program provides financial assistance to publishers for the publication of books on or relating to Japan in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts, in languages other than Japanese.
Assistance is in the form of subsidies for production costs only (printing, binding, paper, plate-making, etc.). Awards are normally limited to a maximum of one-quarter of these costs, provided that the estimates thereof are approved by the Foundation. Special consideration may be given to applicants from nonprofit organizations and for academic works, in which cases the maximum subsidy may be extended to one-half of the printing and binding costs.
Only publishers are eligible to apply for this program. Applications will not be accepted from authors, translators, or other individuals. Works in the natural sciences are not eligible. Publications granted assistance must be completed within the 1996 Japanese fiscal year (April 1, 1996 to March 31, 1997).
TRANSLATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
This program provides financial assistance to publishers for the translation of Japanese works of high quality on or relating to Japan in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Translation proposals of Japanese classics, introductory works on Japan, and reference works valuable for Japanese studies are particularly welcome.
Support of this program will normally cover from 40-80 percent of the translator's fee. The amount of subsidy varies depending on whether or not the work to be translated is on the "List of Recommended Works," and also whether it is classified as an academic or general work. This judgment will be made by the Selection Committee in Japan.
Only publishers are eligible to apply for this program. Applications from authors, translators, or other individuals will not be accepted. Works in the natural sciences are not eligible. Except in special cases, translations must be completed within two years after the subsidization has begun.
