ARTS AND EXCHANGE OF PERSONS PROGRAMS
ARTISTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
This program provides artists such as writers, musicians, painters, sculptors, stage artists, movie directors, etc.; and specialists in the arts such as scenario writers and curators, with the opportunity to pursue creative projects in Japan and to meet and consult with their Japanese counterparts.
Several Artists Fellowships for periods of two to six months duration are available during the 1996 Japanese fiscal year (April 1, 1996-March 31, 1997). Applicants must be accredited professional artists or specialists. Affiliation with a Japanese artist or institution is required. Three letters of reference, including one from the Japanese affiliate must accompany all applications.
Stipends and allowances, as well as basic terms and conditions, are essentially the same as those of the RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (please see pages 5-7).
EXHIBITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
This program provides financial support to institutions and museums in the United States for exhibitions that promote the understanding of Japanese art and culture. Applicants must already have substantial funding for their project, to which The Japan Foundation will make a supplemental grant in the form of subsidies to cover the costs of packing and transporting works, production of the catalogue, as well as air transportation and allowances for invited curators or specialists. Applications for exhibitions utilizing pieces from collections in Japan will be given higher priority. Applications that are part of a cultural exchange program involving sister cities and/or one-person exhibitions will receive lower priority.
CULTURAL PROPERTIES SPECIALISTS FELLOWSHIP
This program provides specialists in the conservation and restoration of cultural properties such as remains, artistic objects, handicrafts, old documents, films, and records with the opportunity to conduct joint research with Japanese specialists and/or to develop their professional skills. Several from two to six months Cultural Properties Specialists Fellowships in duration are available for the 1996 Japanese fiscal year. The stipends and allowances, as well as the basic terms and conditions, are essentially the same as those of the RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM on pages 5-7.
FILM PRODUCTION SUPPORT
This program provides financial support for the production of films, TV programs, and other audio-visual materials that serve to promote an understanding of Japan and Japanese culture abroad.
Individuals or corporations with knowledge and proven experience in the field of film-making are eligible to apply for this program, and priority will be given to projects on Japan which have no counterpart in the target language and hold great potential for television broadcast or public screening.
The grant, in principle, is in the form of subsidies of up to ~5 million for production costs. Awards will not, however, exceed one-half of the total cost of production. Projects receiving assistance under this program are to be completed within the 1996 Japanese fiscal year (April 1, 1996 to March 31, 1997). Funding will be provided after project is completed.
