LIBRARY SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Library Support Program is designed to promote research on and understanding of Japan in the United States through donations of books and other materials related to Japan and funding for resource acquisitions. Another goal of the Library Support Program is to promote resource sharing and library cooperation both regionally and nationally. The library of any American research or educational institution above the high-school level is eligible to apply for support.
Although the Foundation can not make commitments for more than a single year at a time, long-term planning is welcomed, and subsequent applications may be submitted in consecutive years. Approximately 20 grants will be made during the 1996 Japanese fiscal year.
There are four categories in the Library Support Program: Categories A1 and A2 are for materials in English; Categories B1 and B2 are for materials in Japanese.

Category A1

Primarily for institutions having virtually no previous holdings on Japan. Awardees in this category will receive a basic set of books considered most essential by a panel of Japan specialists and librarians. The total value of the set will be approximately Y300,000.

Category A2

Intended for institutions expanding curricular development in Japanese studies. Applicants are given a list of selected titles in the English language, from which they may request individual titles, up to a total value of ~1,000,000. The titles requested should be based on detailed evidence from both instructional programs and existing library holdings on Japan. Preference will be given to consortial applications.

The Foundation will bear the entire cost for institutions applying for books under these categories.

Category B1

Primarily for established Japanese-language collections. Research libraries may apply under Category B1. singly and/or as part of a consortium, for acquisitions funding for specific projects. In order to encourage resource sharing. first priority will be given to innovative, cooperative proposals, particularly: 1) joint proposals for long-term cooperative collection development, or 2) individual acquisitions projects designed to serve regional or national audiences through a program of aggressive dissemination of holdings and their contents.
The amount of support will be commensurately greater for applications that meet these criteria.

Category B2

Libraries (especially newly formed Japanese collections and undergraduate or geographically isolated institutions) may apply under Category B2 for acquisitions funding for reference works and basic materials that cannot easily be shared through inter-library loan, on-line access to databases, or document/information delivery.

For Categories B1 and B2, applicants may also request non-book materials produced in Japan. Current newspapers and periodicals are not supported by this program. Applicants compile their own list of Japanese-language titles, in the range of Y2,000,000, with possible exceptions for consortial applications. Prompt processing and complete on-line cataloging of all materials and a final written report are required.

Support for Categories B1 and B2 can be in the form of donations of books and materials or monetary grants. In either case, grants are carried out on a cost-sharing basis with the cost of shipping or postage borne by the recipient and the total cost of the books and other materials by The Foundation.

Note:
For Japanese-language teaching materials, institutions should apply to the JAPANESE-LANGUAGE TEACHlNG MATERIALS DONATION PROGRAM (page 20).
