Foreign semiconductor firms have steadily penetrated the Japanese market

On a value basis, sales of foreign semiconductors in the Japanese market grew to more than seven times, from the 1986 level of US$900 million to US$6.3 billion in 1994.

The amount purchased for 1986 is taken from WSTS data. 1987-1990 are figures researched by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry. 1991 is estimated from various types of data, and 1992 and beyond is taken from F2 numeric data.

The market share held by foreign semiconductor manufacturers in the Japanese market has grown to mark more than 20% for eight consecutive quarters, beginning with the fourth quarter of 1993. As of the third quarter of 1995, foreign semiconductor manufacturers held a 27% share of the Japanese market.

Foreign-based semiconductors are identited by "final assenbly," and "captives" (semiconductured and used internaly by a company that dose not sell semiconductors in the merchant market) are not included.
