Status
(i)The year 2009 marked the second year of implementation of the UN-HABITAT Water and Sanitation Trust Fund (WSTF) Strategic Plan for the period 2008 to 2012. The overall focus of the WSTF Strategic Plan is on consolidating the existing portfolio of the Trust Fund combined with modest expansion.
Four key programme areas continue to guide the activities of the Trust Fund:
i) delivering sustainable services to the poor; ii) ensuring synergy between the built and natural environments; iii) monitoring the internationally agreed water and sanitation goals; and iv) integrating infrastructure and housing provision.
(ii)The following three key outcomes have been achieved:
i) increased institutional capacity in partner countries for pro-poor water and sanitation initiatives and policies; ii) increased flow of investment into water and sanitation sector catalyzed by WSTF interventions; and iii) improved Millennium Development Goals monitoring mechanisms for water and sanitation in partner countries, with improved benchmarking of water and sanitation service providers.

(i) 200 water kiosks have been built on public and private lands, privately operated using micro credit financed commercially from local saving mechanisms and banks.
(ii) South-south transfer of low-cost wind pump technologies in the Lake Victoria region through capacity building of local technicians and construction of 15 wind pumps.
(iii) This project was targeted initially around 6000 people with increased access to water with 50 hand pumps and 15 wind rope pumps plus infrastructure and knowledge for local production and sales for further expansion.
