The 14th Meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee (Results)

On July 9, the 14th meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee was held in Saclay, France, under the co-chairmanship of Mr. MATSUMOTO Kyosuke, Ambassador, Deputy Director General for Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Dr Anne-Isabelle ETIENVRE, Chairman of the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).

  1. At this meeting, meaningful discussions were held in line with the Joint Statement on Nuclear Energy Cooperation Between Japan and France issued by Ms. Sanae TAKAICHI, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Emmanuel MACRON, President of France , on April 1, 2026 . Specifically, the discussions covered a wide range of areas, such as nuclear energy policies of both countries, research and development in the areas of nuclear energy, including fast reactors and fuel cycle, as well as of fusion energy, back-end, final waste management and repository, nuclear safety and radiation protection, the decommissioning of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)'s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and efforts toward environmental restoration in Fukushima.
  2. Based on the result of the meeting, further enhancement of the nuclear cooperation between Japan and France is expected, in particular in the area of fast neutron reactors technology, following the launch of the French Nuclear Fuel Cycle Closing Program and an ongoing program in Japan for the development of fast reactors.

In the Japan - France Joint Declaration on Nuclear Energy and Energy Policy issued at the Japan - France Summit Meeting in October 2011, it was decided to establish a committee composed of relevant participants from both countries in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas related to nuclear energy. The first meeting was held in Tokyo in February 2012, and the previous 13th meeting was held in Tokyo in June 2025.
