Visit to Japan by H.E. Dr. Grossi, Director General of the IAEA

From June 23 to 26, H.E. Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will pay a visit to Japan.
- The IAEA plays an indispensable role in ensuring nuclear non-proliferation and in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, which are important pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). For maintaining and strengthening the NPT regime, Japan attaches great importance to the IAEA’s efforts.
- On the occasion of Director General Grossi’s visit to Japan, Japan intends to reaffirm further cooperation between Japan and the IAEA toward maintaining and strengthening the NPT regime including through his meetings with senior government officials of Japan.
- Japan and the IAEA have also been working closely together on confirming the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and advancing efforts toward the decommissioning of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). Director General Grossi is scheduled to visit TEPCO's FDNPS during his visit. Furthermore, taking this opportunity, Director General Grossi will preside over the implementation of the additional measures related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.

In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred on conducting additional measures under the IAEA framework. This time is the ninth mission for conducting the additional measures since October 2024.
