May 20, 2026
On May 20, commencing at around 2:30 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, exchanged views with heads of international organizations, including H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, who were visiting Japan.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that as multilateralism faces difficulties, it is more important than ever for countries to work together by pooling their strengths at the UN rather than being divided, and that Japan’s commitment to multilateralism centered on the UN, as this year marks 70th anniversary of its accession to the UN, remains unchanged.
- In addition, Minister MOTEGI cited the promotion of the rule of law in the international community, efforts to address global issues, and initiatives to strengthen the functions of international organizations that support multilateralism as points that Japan emphasizes regarding multilateralism and stated that Japan would cooperate with the United Nations from these perspectives. Furthermore, the Minister stated that Japan is prepared to make further international contributions in terms of human resources and reiterated the request for consideration regarding the recruitment and promotion of Japanese staff members.
- The heads of international organizations, including UN Secretary-General Guterres, expressed their gratitude for Japan’s contributions to the UN, and referred to the initiatives and concerns of each organization.
