On January 23 to January24 (January 22 to 23 local time), the 32nd Japan-U.S. Security Seminar was held in Washington D.C., and Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message. The overview of the seminar is as follows:

  1. This seminar was co-hosted by JIIA (The Japan Institute of International Affairs) and CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies).
  2. In his video message, at the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that while the world is facing a historic period of great transformation, the Japan-U.S. Alliance remains the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. He also stated that the two countries will further strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of our Alliance, and expand cooperation across a wide range of fields, as concurred at the past Japan-U.S. foreign minister’s meeting. Moreover, as the Government of Japan is currently advancing discussion on revision of the National Security Strategy and the other relevant documents, in addition to ways to upgrade the vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in line with the changing times, he welcomed constructive inputs from the seminar. Finally, he expressed his hope that this forum will further enrich the intellectual foundation of our Alliance.
