On August 4, commencing at 5:15 p.m., for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), who is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. ‎At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed his appreciation for Executive Secretary Floyd’s participation in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremonies, and extended his congratulations on Executive Secretary Floyd’s reappointment. Further, Minister Iwaya stated that Japan attaches importance to maintaining and strengthening the international monitoring system including that of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and seeks to make contributions as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings during war.
  2. In response, Executive Secretary Floyd expressed his gratitude for the invitation to visit Japan and expressed his appreciation for Japan’s contributions to the activities of the CTBTO, including the maintenance and strengthening of 10 domestic monitoring facilities and international monitoring systems. Executive Secretary Floyd also stated that the devastation caused by nuclear weapons must never be repeated. Both sides concurred to further strengthen cooperation toward an early into force of the CTBT.
