The 13th Meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee (Results)


On June 30, the 13th meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee was held in Tokyo under the co-chairmanship of Dr. NAKAMURA Kimitake, Director General for Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Jean-Louis FALCONI, Director of International Relations, Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).
- At this meeting, meaningful discussions were held on a wide range of nuclear energy issues, including nuclear energy policies of both countries, multilateral efforts, new construction of nuclear power plants in both countries and third countries, research and development in the areas of nuclear energy, and fusion energy, advanced nuclear reactors including fast reactors, back-end of the fuel cycle, final waste management and repository, nuclear safety and radiation protection, decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and efforts toward environmental restoration in Fukushima.
- Based on the discussion in the committee, further enhancement of nuclear cooperation between Japan and France is expected.

In the Japan - France Joint Declaration on Nuclear Energy and Energy Policy issued at the Japan - France Summit Meeting in October 2011, it was decided to establish a committee composed of relevant participants from both countries in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas related to nuclear energy. The first meeting was held in Tokyo in February 2012, and the previous 12th meeting was held in Paris in April 2024.
