Courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs FUJII by Ms. Kirsi Madi, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women


On May 22, commencing at 17:30 for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Ms. Kirsi Madi, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women. A summary of the conversation is as follows.
- At the outset, State Minister Fujii welcomed Deputy Executive Director Madi's visit to Japan for the 6th Policy Dialogue of the Government of Japan and UN Women, following her visit in February this year. He also stated that UN Women is an important partner for Japan in advancing Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and implementing development cooperation.
- Furthermore, State Minister Fujii stated that Japan will continue to fulfill its responsibility as co-chair of the WPS Focal Points Network this year, and that Japan would like to cooperate with UN Women in implementing the Next Generation Gender Equality Networking Program, which Japan has newly started this year.
- State Minister Fujii and Deputy Executive Director Madi engaged in a lively exchange of views on Japan's contribution to UN Women and Japanese nationals working at the organization, confirming to continue cooperation in their efforts for the achievement of gender equality.
(Reference1) Women, Peace and Security (WPS)
In 2000, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted the UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), which stated for the first time in the Council's history that international peace and conflict prevention and resolution require the equal participation of women, protection against sexual violence in conflict, and gender equality. To implement the resolution and related resolutions, Japan has so far formulated and implemented three rounds of action plans.
(Reference2) The WPS Focal Points Network
The WPS Focal Points Network is a network amongst the UN Member States to promote the WPS commitments through sharing lessons learned and good practices among Member States and regional organizations; as of May 2025, a total of 106 members from 96 countries and 10 regional organizations are the participants. Japan and Norway are the Co-Chair of the Network in 2025. UN Women serves as the secretariat of the Network.
