Additional Measures under the IAEA framework related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea (Results)

As a part of additional measures under the IAEA framework, the IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories visited Japan and collected samples from February 19th to 21st.
- In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred in conducting the additional measures under the IAEA framework. The additional measures were conducted following those in October 2024.
- On 19th February, IAEA officials and experts from laboratories from China, Republic of Korea, and Switzerland sampled seawater in the vicinity of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). IAEA Director General Grossi, who made a working visit to Japan invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presided over the sampling.
- On 20th February, IAEA officials and experts from the above-mentioned laboratories selected the landed fishery products at a fishing port in Fukushima Prefecture.
- On 21st February, IAEA officials and experts from laboratories from China, France, Republic of Korea, and Switzerland sampled ALPS treated water prior to dilution from measurement/confirmation tanks on the premises of TEPCO’s FDNPS.
- The Government of Japan will continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA in sharing information with the international community in a highly transparent manner and fostering better understanding of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water within both the domestic and international communities.
(Reference) Measurement/confirmation tanks
The tanks used to receive ALPS treated water from the storage tanks etc. on the premises of TEPCO’s FDNPS, and to circulate and stir ALPS treated water to collect representative samples for the analysis prior to the dilution and discharge.
