Video message by Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, for the 31st Japan-U.S. Security Seminar
On February 19-20, the 31st Japan-U.S. Security Seminar was held in Washington D.C., and Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message. The overview of the seminar is as follows.
This seminar was co-hosted by JIIA (The Japan Institute of International Affairs) and CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies).
In his video message, at the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that this year’s seminar is particularly timely as it takes place soon after the first Japan-U.S. summit meeting and then emphasized that the Japan-U.S. alliance plays a growing role at a turning point in history, and he will continue to work closely together at all levels, under the shared vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, to bring the bilateral alliance to new heights. He also stated that the three perspectives of further enhancing the deterrence and response capabilities, close cooperation with like-minded countries, and addressing emerging demands of this new era are important for further modernizing the alliance. He then welcomed the new initiative of this seminar to include economic security topics, and he expressed his hope that this will help expand the network of Japanese and American experts who shape public opinions.
