Visit of H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to Japan

From February 18 to 20, H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will make a working visit to Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
- Japan attaches great importance to the efforts of the IAEA, an international authority in the fields of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear non-proliferation. On this occasion of Director General Grossi’s visit, Japan will further enhance cooperation between Japan and the IAEA on various issues both within the country and overseas through meetings with Japanese government officials, including Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi.
- During his stay, Director General Grossi will visit the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and Interim Storage Facility in Fukushima Prefecture, as well as the TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station in Niigata Prefecture. In Fukushima Prefecture, Director General Grossi will also preside over the implementation of the additional measures related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.

The IAEA is an international organization established in July 1957 for the purpose of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and implementing safeguards to prevent the diversion of nuclear energy for military purposes. It currently has 180 Member States (as of November 2024).

(Reference3) Additional measures related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea
In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred in conducting the additional measures under the IAEA framework. This time, additional measures will be conducted following the measures in October 2024.
