Release of IAEA report regarding Marine Monitoring

January 6, 2025

After the accident of Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been conducting  Marine Monitoring since 2014 to ensure the credibility and transparency of Sea Area Monitoring data.

  1. The IAEA conducted Interlaboratory Comparisons (ILCs) in 2023, in which the IAEA compared analysis results of IAEA, Japanese laboratories and third-country laboratories from Canada, China, and Republic of Korea on seawater, sediment and fish samples jointly collected by IAEA and Japan.
  2. On 30 December, last year, the IAEA released a report on the results of the ILCs stating that Japan's sample collection procedures were appropriate and that a continued high level of accuracy and competence on the part of Japanese laboratories involved in the analyses of radionuclides in marine samples was demonstrated.
  3. IAEA Marine Monitoring will be continued in the future.

In the ILC, the IAEA, third country analytical laboratories selected by the IAEA, and Japanese laboratories analyze the same samples collected individually, and the IAEA compares their analysis results to confirm that laboratories’ analytical methods and analysis results for radionuclides are appropriate.
