Japan- U.S. ministerial meeting on extended deterrence

On July 28, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Japan-U.S. ministerial meeting on extended deterrence was convened in Tokyo. The meeting was held at the ministerial level among Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. KIHARA Minoru, Minister of Defense, from the Japanese side, and the Honorable Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, and the Honorable Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense, from the U.S. side, with the participation of co-chairs of the Japan-U.S. Extended Deterrence Dialogue (EDD). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Both sides welcomed the first ministerial meeting dedicated to extended deterrence, which was held in accordance with the Japan-U.S. Joint Leaders’ Statement on April 10. Both sides also welcomed the fact that, at the EDD, which has been held regularly since 2010, discussions for strengthening extended deterrence have been deepened continuously between two countries and confirmed that Japan and the U.S. will continue enhancing the discussions on extended deterrence at various levels, primarily through the EDD.
- Both sides held in-depth discussions on cooperation for further strengthening extended deterrence and issued the joint statement of the ministerial meeting on extended deterrence (link to the joint statement [JP (PDF) / EN (PDF) ]).
