Meeting and Working Dinner between Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamikawa and H.E. Mr. Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of League of Arab States

On July 10, commencing at 6:30 p.m. for approximately 110 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a meeting and a working dinner with H.E. Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General, League of Arab States, during his Official Working Visit to Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that she welcomes Secretary General Aboul Gheit’s visit to Japan for the first time since he took office. Minister Kamikawa also stated that it is a great pleasure to hold the 5th Japan-Arab Economic Forum in Tokyo and that at tomorrow’s Ministerial Conference, she would like to discuss specific measures to further deepen the economic partnership between Japan and the Arab countries as reliable partners under the theme “resilient and sustainable economic development”. In response, Secretary General Aboul Gheit expressed his gratitude for the hospitality upon this visit and stated that he would like to further deepen Japan-Arab relations through the 5th Japan-Arab Economic Forum.
  2. The two sides held a discussion on the relations between Japan and the League of Arab States. Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan-Arab cooperation is steadily developing under the platforms of the “Japan-Arab Political Dialogue” and the “Japan-Arab Economic Forum” and the two sides concurred on continuing cultural and education cooperation as well as people-to-people exchange. The two sides also concurred on maintaining and strengthening a free and open maritime order. The two sides also exchanged views on women’s advancement in society, and concurred on advancing cooperation in fields including Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
  3. The two sides exchanged views on regional and international issues.
    (1) Minister Kamikawa stated that she thinks of the current situation in the Middle East as her own. Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, Minister Kamikawa stated that she will continue to urge all parties to abide by international law, and to make diplomatic efforts to realize the release of the hostages and a ceasefire as soon as possible. Minister Kamikawa also stated that Japan is encouraging South East Asian countries to get involved in supporting Palestine through the Conference on cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD).
    (2) The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Syria and Libya. The two sides concurred on continuing to work together for the peace and stability of the Middle East.
