Foreign Minister Kamikawa held a meeting with Ms. Waly, Executive Director of the UNODC

On July 4, from 1:30 p.m. for about 35 minutes, Minister KAMIKAWA received a courtesy call by Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), who is visiting Japan to conduct the 11th Japan-UNODC Strategic Policy Dialogue. The overview of the courtesy call was as follows.
Prior to the meeting, the two sides signed and exchanged notes for the Grant Aid "The Project for Strengthening Counter-narcotics Capacities" in Afghanistan (grant amount: 1.514 billion yen).

  1. Minister KAMIKAWA welcomed Ms. Waly's visit to Japan and stated that Japan further strengthens cooperation with UNODC as a strategic partner.
  2. Both sides expressed their expectations that the Japan-UNODC Strategic Policy Dialogue, to be held on July 5, will be a meaningful event that sets the direction of their strategic relationship for the next 10 years building on their cooperation in the past decade. They also affirmed close cooperation on issues such as Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and youth empowerment.

UNODC was established in 1997 as a result of the merging of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme. Headquartered in Vienna, UNODC carries out research and analyses on illegal drugs and crime, helps countries with the conclusion and execution of conventions related to crime and narcotic drugs and with the development of domestic legislation, and provides technical cooperation for capacity building in countering organized crime and terrorism.

A framework for dialogue between Japan and UNODC launched in 2013. Discussions are held at a high level between Japan and UNODC from a strategic perspective on priority issues to be addressed in cooperation and the future of cooperation.
