Ms. Ghada Fathi Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), to Visit Japan

Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will visit Japan from July 4 to July 6. During her stay in Japan, Ms. Waly is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko and hold the "11th Japan-UNODC Strategic Policy Dialogue". The main schedule is as follows.

  1. On the afternoon of July 4, the Executive Director Waly will pay a courtesy call on Minister KAMIKAWA and exchange views on various issues with her.
  2. On the morning of July 5, Ms. Waly will hold the 11th Japan-UNODC Strategic Policy Dialogue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Mr. KOBE Yasuhiro, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, with the participation of officials from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the National Police Agency, and the Japan Coast Guard, to discuss strategic goals and priority areas, looking ahead to Japan-UNODC relations over the coming years.
  3. On March 5 at 3:00 p.m., Ms. Waly will give a lecture at Waseda University on the theme of the expected roles of youth in the world.
(Reference1) United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

UNODC was established in 1997 as a result of the merging of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme. Headquartered in Vienna, UNODC carries out research and analyses on illegal drugs and crime, helps countries with the conclusion and execution of conventions related to crime and narcotic drugs and with the development of domestic legislation, and provides technical cooperation for capacity building in countering organized crime and terrorism.

A framework for dialogue between Japan and UNODC launched in 2013. Discussions are held at a high level between Japan and UNODC from a strategic perspective on priority issues to be addressed in cooperation and the future of cooperation.
