The 12th Meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee (Results)

- On April 15, the 12th meeting of the Japan - France Nuclear Cooperation Committee was held in Paris under the co-chairmanship of Mr. KITAGAWA Katsuro, Director General for Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. François JACQ, Chairman and Executive Officer, Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).
- At this meeting, meaningful discussions were held on a wide range of nuclear energy issues, including nuclear energy policy of both countries, research and development, advanced nuclear reactors including fast reactors, material testing reactors, nuclear safety and security, nuclear emergency preparedness and response, back-end of the fuel cycle, final waste management, current status of decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, environment restoration including off-site decontamination activities. Based on the discussion in the committee, further enhancement of nuclear cooperation between Japan and France is expected.

In the Japan - France Joint Declaration on Nuclear Energy and Energy Policy issued at the Japan - France Summit Meeting in October 2011, it was decided to establish a committee composed of relevant participants from both countries in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all areas related to nuclear energy. The first meeting was held in Tokyo in February 2012, and the previous 11th meeting was held in Tokyo on March 2023.
