Meeting between Foreign Minister Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Ms. Marija Pejčinović Burić

On December 3, commencing at 2:05 a.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, who is on a working visit to Japan to attend the World Assembly for Woman (WAW!). The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude to Secretary General Pejčinović Burić for her participation in the World Assembly for Woman (WAW!) in a row and stated that he wished to strengthen cooperation with Council of Europe as the only observer state from Asia.
    Secretary General Pejčinović Burić expressed her gratitude for the invitation to the WAW! and stated that she was able to participate in meaningful discussions.
  2. Minister Hayashi stated that Japan values the Council of Europe’s efforts and stated that Japan is also joining in the efforts of the Council of Europe through joining several treaties which are initiated by the Council of Europe and participation in international conferences and financial contributions.
    In response, Secretary General Pejčinović Burić expressed appreciation for Japan's contributions and activities and expectations for strengthening relations in the future, and expressed her desire to further cooperate with Japan, which will assume the G7 chairmanship in the coming year.
  3. In addition, both sides also exchanged views on the response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine and on the situation in East Asia.
