Negotiations on amendment of the Japan-UK Nuclear Cooperation Agreement

June 5, 2019

1. On June 4 (Tuesday) in Tokyo, the negotiations on the amendment of the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement between the Governments of Japan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) were held.

2. Last October, both sides shared the view to commence negotiations on the amendment of the Agreement, in preparation for the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). Ever since, Japan and the UK have exchanged views, including through preliminary consultations. The negotiations were held as a result of those consultations with the situation on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU/Euratom in mind, such as its extension up to the end of October.

3. This meeting was attended from the Japanese side by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant ministries, and discussions with the UK side were held on the content of an amendment and on how to conduct talks in this meeting as well as in the future.
