Dinner Meeting between Foreign Minister Kono and Deputy Chairman of the Royal Cambodian Armed Force (RCAF) Joint Staff, LT. Gen. Hun Manet

In the evening of April 27, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, hosted a dinner meeting for the delegation headed by H.E. LT. Gen. Hun Manet, Deputy Chairman of the Royal Cambodian Armed Force (RCAF) Joint Staff, who is visiting Japan under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Strategic Exchanges on Practical Level Invitation Program. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Minister Kono welcomed the visit to Japan by LT. Gen Hun Manet and other future leaders of Cambodia, expressing the expectation that participation by persons from the younger generation will help to further deepen cooperative relations between Japan and Cambodia.

In response, LT. Gen Hun Manet expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome extended to the members of the Cambodian delegation on this visit, and noted that through the many meetings he had held with representatives of the Government and the Diet, as well as influential members of the private sector, he had got a real sense of the strength of the bonds that have continued to link the two countries in the years since peace came to Cambodia.

2. Minister Kono stated that Japan places great importance on Cambodia’s development and will continue to provide assistance. Looking ahead to the future of both countries he also expressed his intention to further promote more exchanges like this current visit, among the younger generations of Japan and Cambodia.

In response, LT. Gen Hun Manet expressed appreciation for Japan’s assistance over the course of many years and indicated his determination to continue to advance national development with Japan’s cooperation and consistently support Japan’s role in the international community.

3. In the meeting the Cambodian side shared the views of the younger generation on Cambodia’s history, society and international relations. Referring to the political situation in Cambodia, Minister Kono once again urged Cambodia to conduct the general election this July in a way that appropriately reflects the will of the people. LT. Gen. Hun Manet responded that he would convey Minister Kono’s comments to Prime Minister Hun Sen following his return to Cambodia.
